Navigate Capri like a pro with our first-hand funicular guide covering schedules, prices, tickets, and insider tips.
Stepping off the ferry at Marina Grande and looking up at Capri town perched high on the hillside, you might wonder how you’ll make that climb! The answer is simple: the iconic funicular railway. This charming cable car has been whisking visitors up the steep hillside since 1907, and it remains the fastest, cheapest, and most quintessentially Capri way to reach the island’s famous Piazzetta.
Whether you’re planning a day trip from Sorrento or spending time exploring this stunning island off the Amalfi Coast, understanding how the funicular Capri system works will save you time, money, and energy.
chapters:
Understanding the Funicular Capri System
The Capri funicular is a funicular railway connecting Marina Grande on the coast with Piazza Umberto I in the center of the island, running 670 meters and climbing 139 meters in vertical distance. First opened in 1907, this historic transportation system has become as much a part of the Capri experience as the Blue Grotto or Faraglioni rocks!
The funicular railway operates as a simple yet efficient system with two cars that move simultaneously as one ascends, the other descends. The line includes a 68-meter tunnel at the lower end, adding a bit of atmospheric drama to your journey. The funicular underwent a four-month upgrade in early 2018, including the replacement of winding motors and remodeling of the two cars, resulting in a 20% increase in capacity.
The journey takes under 5 minutes, making it significantly faster than walking (about 30 minutes uphill) and more economical than taxis. We paid €2.40 per person one-way ($2.60 USD), which proved to be the best transportation option for getting from the port to Capri town.
The Two Stations: Your Starting Points
The lower station (Valle) sits at Marina Grande, directly near where ferries from Sorrento, Naples, Positano, and Amalfi dock. The ticket office is located to the right of the arrival pier (with the sea at your back), near the hydrofoil ticket offices. The entrance features a distinctive white arch labeled “FUNICULAR” that’s hard to miss once you know what you’re looking for.
The upper station (Monte) opens directly into the heart of Capri town, steps away from the famous Piazzetta (officially Piazza Umberto I). Chic cafés, luxury boutiques, and breathtaking views surround this central square. The upper station features a terrace with spectacular panoramic views of the Gulf, we recommend pausing here for photos before diving into the crowds!

Funicular Capri Schedule and Operating Hours
The funicular operates daily from 6:30 AM to 9:30-11:00 PM, with departures every 15 minutes during regular periods, though during peak times the funicular runs non-stop. During high season, you might find the frequency increases to every 10 minutes or even continuously as cars fill up.
Critical timing information: From January until Easter, the funicular closes for annual maintenance, with a replacement bus service provided during this period. We suggest checking the official Capri tourism website for current schedules before your visit, as exact operating hours can vary seasonally.
After the funicular stops running (typically around 10:00-11:00 PM), a substitute bus service operates along the same route. Service is unavailable between 2:00 AM and 5:00 AM.
Tickets and Pricing
The current funicular ticket costs €2.40 per person for a one-way journey (approximately $2.60 USD as of 2025). This option is much more affordable compared to taxis, which have set rates of €17 for up to four passengers and €20 for up to seven passengers (around $18.50–22 USD) for the same route between Marina Grande and Capri town.
Additional costs to consider:
- Luggage supplement: €2.40 extra for bags exceeding carry-on size (23cm x 30cm x 50cm and maximum 10kg) ($2.60 USD)
- Pet tickets: €2.40 for dogs (must be leashed and muzzled) ($2.60 USD)
- UNICO Capri day pass: €8.60 includes unlimited bus rides and two funicular trips ($9.35 USD)
Where to Buy Capri Funicular Tickets
Here’s something crucial we learned during our Capri visit: you must purchase tickets at the ticket office before boarding, tickets are not sold at the station entrance or onboard the funicular. The main ticket office (marked “Biglietteria”) is located at Marina Grande, to the right of the arrival pier near the hydrofoil ticket offices.
Tickets are also available at the Capri town terminal located in Piazza Martiri d’Ungheria, just a minute away from the Piazzetta, as well as in Anacapri at Piazza della Pace. Some travelers report buying tickets at select tobacco shops and newsstands, though availability isn’t guaranteed.
Insider tip: Buy your funicular ticket at the port of Naples or Sorrento before taking the ferry to Capri. This small planning step can save you precious time waiting in ticket lines when everyone else from your ferry is queuing at the Marina Grande ticket office!

Making the Most of Your Funicular Experience
Best Times to Avoid the Crowds
Based on multiple travel sources and our October experience, the most problematic times at Marina Grande are from 10 AM to approximately 4:30 PM. During the peak summer months (May through September), long lines form at the funicular and bus stops, sometimes resulting in waits of 30+ minutes.
We recommend these crowd-beating strategies:
Early morning advantage: Take a ferry around 8 AM from Naples or Sorrento to arrive before tourist groups and cruise ships. The earliest hydrofoils depart at 7:00 AM, giving you the island practically to yourself for those first magical hours.
Strategic timing: During our mid-October visit (shoulder season), we still had to wait for a second car during midday. In summer, expect even longer waits. Consider walking downhill in the afternoon when return lines get really long, the walk from Piazzetta to Marina Grande takes about 15 minutes and the path is clearly marked.
Alternative route: If you arrive and see an extremely long line, head toward the Banchinella pier, where buses to Capri depart. This is a lesser-known option and is usually less crowded.
Capturing the Best Views
The funicular journey offers beautiful glimpses of Marina Grande, the Gulf of Naples, and Capri’s dramatic coastline, though views are somewhat limited by the crowds and short journey time. The funicular can accommodate 70 passengers at one time, which means you’ll likely be packed in pretty tightly during peak periods.
For the best photo opportunities, we suggest positioning yourself near the windows if possible, though this requires strategic queuing. The most spectacular views actually come after you exit at the upper station. There’s a viewpoint terrace where you can capture panoramic shots of the entire port area and coastline without the rush

Luggage and Special Considerations
Passengers are permitted one bag per person weighing up to 10 kg and measuring 23 cm x 30 cm x 50 cm, roughly the size of a typical carry-on. Larger luggage items require an additional €2.40 ($2.60 USD) fee.
Our honest recommendation: If you’re traveling with large suitcases, we think paying €17-20 ($18.50-22 USD) for a taxi makes more sense than wrestling luggage through the crowds, up stairs, and onto the funicular. Most streets in Capri are made of basalt, which is quite difficult for rolling wheeled luggage, so factor in the entire journey when deciding your transportation method.
Baby strollers and carriages must be collapsed before getting on the bus or funicular. For travelers with significant luggage, porter services are available at a fee of €10-15 per bag ($11-16 USD) for routes between Marina Grande and the center of Capri or Anacapri.
Stay where the memories are made. Our favorite Italy Hotels include cozy hillside retreats in Scala and dreamy cliffside views on the Amalfi Coast.

Alternative Transportation Options on Capri
Buses
Capri’s orange buses offer an alternative to the funicular, running between Marina Grande and Capri town. Bus tickets cost €2.90 ($3.15 USD) if purchased on board, slightly more expensive than the funicular. Buses are small with approximately 30 seats, and queues often form at stops.
The bus route takes longer than the funicular (typically 10-15 minutes) but offers panoramic views as it winds up the hillside. During the funicular’s annual January-to-Easter closure, buses provide the replacement service along the same route.
Walking
We tried walking down from Capri town to Marina Grande and found it manageable – the downhill walk takes about 15 minutes with clearly marked paths starting near the funicular station. However, the uphill route is much more challenging with several sections containing steps, and is not recommended, especially with luggage or during hot summer months.
The walking route can be a pleasant option for the return journey if you want to avoid afternoon queues and enjoy a more leisurely pace. Just remember: downhill is easy, uphill is a workout!
Taxis
Capri’s iconic white convertible taxis offer a glamorous alternative! The fare between Marina Grande and Capri town is set at €17 for groups of up to four people and €20 for groups of up to seven (approximately $18.50–22 USD). For groups of 3-4 people, the per-person cost becomes competitive with the funicular, especially when you factor in luggage supplements.
During our Capri day trip from Amalfi in October, we used a combination of the funicular (going up) and taxis (for specific destinations like Marina Piccola), which gave us the best of both experiences.

Day Itinerary: Maximizing Your Capri Experience
Here’s how we integrated the funicular into our perfect one-day Capri itinerary:
Morning (8:00 AM – 12:00 PM): We took the €30 ($33 USD) ferry from Amalfi to Capri, arriving at Marina Grande around 9:00 AM. After storing our luggage at the port (€5 per piece + fees, totaling $22.18 USD), we purchased funicular tickets and rode up to Capri town. From there, we wandered the Piazzetta, enjoyed gelato at Buonocore Gelateria ($5.47 USD), and explored before taking the €2.40 ($5.26 USD) bus to Anacapri.
Afternoon (12:00 PM – 4:00 PM): In Anacapri, we rode the Mount Solaro chairlift (€14 per person round-trip, $30.66 USD), offering absolutely stunning 360-degree views of the entire island and Amalfi Coast. After exploring Anacapri’s boutiques and churches, we returned to Capri town for lunch at Pulalli (€99, $108.39 USD).
Late Afternoon (4:00 PM – 7:00 PM): We visited the Gardens of Augustus (€2.50 per person, $5.47 USD), then walked down to Marina Piccola. Rather than taking the funicular from Capri town back to Marina Grande, we hired a private boat ($58.06 USD ferry to Sorrento), which offered spectacular views of the Faraglioni rocks.
Total transportation costs for our Capri day: Approximately $180 USD per couple, including ferries, funicular, buses, and the chairlift.
Experience Italy the way we did. From Vespa rides and wine tastings to cooking classes and hidden tours, these Italy Activities are worth adding to your trip.
Connecting to Other Amalfi Coast Destinations
The funicular Capri system is just one piece of your larger Amalfi Coast transportation puzzle. Capri is accessible by ferry from:
- Sorrento: Fast ferries typically cost about €20 (about $22 USD) and take approximately 30 minutes
- Naples: Similar pricing and approximately 40-50 minutes journey time
- Positano and Amalfi: Seasonal ferries from April through October
- Ischia: Inter-island connections available during high season
During our Italian adventure, we also explored the Blue Grotto (accessible by bus from Anacapri), Punta Carena lighthouse, and enjoyed boat tours around the island. The funicular served as our reliable base for all these adventures, providing quick access between our ferry arrivals/departures and the island’s center.

Insider Tips for Funicular Success
After our Capri experience and extensive research, here are our top recommendations:
Skip the midday madness: If your ferry arrives between 10 AM and 4 PM, consider taking the bus or walking down (but not up!) to avoid the longest funicular waits.
Buy tickets strategically: Purchase at Naples or Sorrento ports before boarding your ferry, or arrive early at Marina Grande before the masses.
Consider the day pass: At €8.60 ($9.35 USD), the UNICO Capri pass makes sense if you’re planning multiple bus trips plus the funicular.
Pack light: The less luggage you have, the better your funicular experience will be. We used the paid luggage storage at Marina Grande ($22.18 USD for 7 hours) and explored the island hands-free – totally worth it!
Have exact change: While the ticket office accepts cards, having cash on hand for tickets, buses, and small purchases makes everything go more smoothly.
Check seasonal closures: Always verify the funicular is operating before your visit, especially if traveling January through March when annual maintenance typically occurs.
Make Italy stress-free from the start. Our curated Italy Packing List covers every season and region, so you’re ready for city strolls, vineyard tours, and coastal getaways.
