4-Day Bangkok Itinerary

Day 1: Grand Palace & Old City Highlights

bangkok-itinerary

Kick off your Bangkok adventure by diving straight into the city’s most iconic landmarks! The historic heart of Bangkok houses the most significant cultural and religious sites, and this itinerary of Bangkok lets you see them all in one day without exhausting yourself.

Pro tip: Start EARLY! We cannot emphasize this enough. The Grand Palace opens at 8:30 AM, and arriving right at opening time will save you from both the midday heat and the massive tour groups that arrive around 10 AM. This simple trick will completely transform your Bangkok trip itinerary experience!

Morning: Grand Palace

itinerary in bangkok

The Grand Palace complex is the absolute must-see attraction in any Bangkok itinerary, and for good reason. This breathtaking 18th-century complex served as the official residence of the Kings of Siam (and later Thailand). The ornate details and shimmering gold spires are even more impressive in person than in photos!

itinerary of bangkok

What to See at the Grand Palace:

  • Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha) – Thailand’s most sacred Buddhist temple
  • The Emerald Buddha itself – carved from a single piece of jade (not actually emerald)
  • Chakri Maha Prasat Hall – an interesting blend of Thai and European architectural styles
  • The Royal Reception Halls – former throne halls now open to visitors
bangkok trip itinerary

Practical Information:

  • Opening Hours: 8:30 AM – 3:30 PM daily
  • Entrance Fee: 500 THB ($15 USD) per person
  • Dress Code: Strictly enforced! No shorts, sleeveless tops, tight-fitting stretchy pants, or sandals without heel straps. Many tourists end up purchasing cover-ups at the entrance – like my parents… (150 THB/$4.50 USD or more).
  • Time Needed: 2-3 hours to properly explore

Planning your dream trip to Thailand? Here’s everything you need to know!

Afternoon: Wat Pho (Reclining Buddha)

bangkok travel itinerary

After exploring the Grand Palace, head just south (about a 10-minute walk) to Wat Pho, home to the magnificent Reclining Buddha. This golden wonder is truly awe-inspiring at 46 meters long and 15 meters high! 😮 It’s a must-see on any bangkok-itinerary.

Wat Pho is also known as the birthplace of traditional Thai massage, and the temple complex is considerably more relaxed than the Grand Palace, with fewer crowds and lovely gardens perfect for taking a short break from the heat, a peaceful stop in your itinerary in Bangkok.

3 day bangkok itinerary

What to See at Wat Pho:

  • The Reclining Buddha, don’t miss the intricate mother-of-pearl inlays on the feet
  • The main ordination hall with its Buddha images
  • The four chedis (stupas) dedicated to the first four Chakri kings
  • Consider booking a quick foot massage to rest those tired feet in the traditional Thai massage school!
bangkok 3 day itinerary

Practical Information:

  • Opening Hours: 8:00 AM – 6:30 PM daily
  • Entrance Fee: 200 THB ($6 USD) per person
  • Dress Code: Same as the Grand Palace, though slightly less strict enforcement
  • Time Needed: 1-2 hours

Lunch Recommendation: After Wat Pho, grab lunch at the nearby Tha Tien Market. There are several small restaurants and food stalls offering authentic Thai dishes at local prices. A delicious plate of Pad Thai costs just 60 THB ($1.80 USD), and fresh coconut water is served in the coconut for 50 THB ($1.50 USD). We love getting a cold coconut water on a hot day of sightseeing!

Evening: Wat Arun & Dinner over the River

3 days itinerary bangkok

From Tha Tien Pier (right next to the market), take a quick ferry across the Chao Phraya River to Wat Arun, also known as the Temple of Dawn. This ferry crossing costs just 4 THB ($0.12 USD) and takes about 5 minutes, but offers some fantastic photo opportunities of riverside Bangkok, making it a highlight in any itinerary of Bangkok.

Wat Arun stands out from other Bangkok temples with its distinctive spires (prangs) covered in colorful porcelain. The central prang reaches 70 meters into the sky, and you can climb about halfway up to enjoy wonderful views of the river and city, definitely one of the must-see BKK things to do.

Our first time here, we showed up only 15 minutes before closing and were treated to some lovely views of sunset over the river.

3 day bangkok itinerary

What to See at Wat Arun:

  • The central prang and four smaller surrounding prangs
  • Detailed floral mosaics made from broken Chinese porcelain
  • Statues of ancient warriors and mythical guardians
  • The ordination hall with its golden Buddha image

Practical Information:

  • Opening Hours: 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM daily
  • Entrance Fee: 100 THB ($3 USD) per person
  • Dress Code: Similar to other temples
  • Time Needed: 1 hour
3 day itinerary bangkok

Dinner with a View: After exploring Wat Arun, take the ferry back across the river and treat yourself to dinner at Supanniga Eating Room, Tha Tien branch. This restaurant offers authentic Thai cuisine with wonderful views back across the river to Wat Arun. The sunset view of the temple lighting up as darkness falls is truly magical! 🌅 Main dishes range from 200-400 THB ($6-12 USD), which is very reasonable given the quality and view.

Late Night: Khao San Road Experience

3 day itinerary for bangkok

Take a short taxi ride to the infamous Khao San Road to cap off your first day in Bangkok. Love it or hate it (and you’ll do a bit of both), this backpacker mecca is a Bangkok institution and worth experiencing at least once. The energy here is electric, with street food vendors, bars, market stalls, and travelers from around the world creating a carnival-like atmosphere, definitely something to include in your itinerary in Bangkok.

Grab a cold Chang beer at one of the sidewalk bars, people-watch, and maybe sample some of the street food – the Pad Thai cooked right in front of you for 80 THB ($2.40 USD) is actually pretty amazing. Just don’t plan to stay too late because tomorrow is another adventure-filled day on your itinerary Bangkok.

This was something my dad just had to see, and we’re glad we did, but we definitely won’t be back anytime soon. Especially after having a cockroach crawl over my chest while having drinks.

Pro Tip: Do not sit or stand over any grates or drains on the street!

3 days itinerary in bangkok

Practical Information:

  • Best Hours: 7:00 PM-midnight
  • Getting There: About 20 minutes by taxi or tuk-tuk from the riverside area (should cost around 100 THB/$3 USD)
  • Safety: While generally safe, be mindful of your belongings in crowded areas
  • Insider Tip: If Khao San is too intense, check out the more laid-back Rambuttri Road just around the corner

Day 2: Day Trip outside the City

bangkok in 3 days itinerary
bangkok three day itinerary

Ready to escape the urban hustle? Day 2 of your Bangkok itinerary takes you beyond city limits to experience Thailand’s enchanting countryside! 🌴

This day offers a perfect contrast to yesterday’s temple marathon, showing you a completely different side of Thai culture with floating markets, quirky art spaces, and some seriously Instagram-worthy spots.

Pro tip: While you could attempt this itinerary using public transportation, hiring a driver for the day is worth every baht for convenience and time savings, not to mention the AC. Expect to pay around 2,000-2,500 THB ($60-75 USD) for a comfortable car and driver for 8-10 hours.

Morning: After the Rain Cafe

bangkok itinerary for 3 days

Start your day with breakfast at one of Bangkok’s most photogenic cafes! After the Rain is a dreamy garden cafe that feels worlds away from Bangkok’s chaos. The cottage-core aesthetic with lush greenery, whimsical decor, and delicious brunch options makes this the perfect first stop, especially if you’re following a Bangkok itinerary 2 days plan. Their fluffy pancakes and iced butterfly pea tea are absolutely to die for! 📸

We ate a yummy breakfast, bought some fish food to feed the fish from our table, and then hopped in the row boats they offer (free for a minimum spend of 100 THB per person), and took a lap around the garden. They also have a very photogenic swing! If you’re wondering how many days in Bangkok are enough to explore hidden gems like this, trust us, two days can cover quite a lot if planned right.

Dragon Temple

4 day bangkok itinerary

Next, head to Wat Samphran (Dragon Temple), one of Thailand’s most unique and underrated temples. This 17-story pink building with a giant dragon wrapped around it looks straight out of a fantasy movie! The dragon is hollow, and visitors can actually climb through parts of it for a truly one-of-a-kind experience.

We’ve been back to this temple a few times now and love it’s authenticity. There’s no entry fee, very few tourists, mostly locals, and a very serene atmosphere you would expect from a religious temple. It’s probably my favorite temple in Thailand!

4 day itinerary bangkok

What to See at Dragon Temple:

  • The massive dragon sculpture wrapped around the building
  • Giant Buddha statues in the surrounding gardens
  • The rooftop with panoramic countryside views

Afternoon: Floating Market (Lunch and Boat Ride)

4 days bangkok itinerary

No Bangkok itinerary is complete without a floating market experience! While Damnoen Saduak is the most famous, it can get insanely crowded with tourists and is quite a trek from the city. Instead, visit Khlong Lat Mayom Floating Market for an authentic experience while still being close to the city. 🚣‍♀️

The market itself is busiest in the late afternoon and evening, but arriving for lunch means you’ll beat the worst crowds. Hop on a longtail boat (around 500-700 THB/$15-21 USD for a private hour-long ride) and cruise through the canals while shopping and eating directly from boat vendors.

4 days itinerary bangkok

Must-Try Foods at the Floating Market:

  • Boat noodles (a rich, flavorful soup served in small bowls)
  • Grilled river prawns (giant and fresh!)
  • Coconut ice cream served in a coconut shell
  • Mango sticky rice (when in season)

Evening: ChangChui Creative Park

itinerary bangkok 4 days

As the afternoon winds down, head back toward Bangkok to ChangChui Creative Park – an absolute playground for creative souls! This hipster haven is built from upcycled materials and features a decommissioned airplane as its centerpiece. The name actually means “sloppy artisan” in Thai, which perfectly captures its delightfully chaotic energy! 🎨

ChangChui is divided into “light” (alcohol-free) and “dark” (with bars) zones, filled with quirky shops, art installations, live music venues, and some of the city’s most innovative restaurants and food stalls.

3 day itinerary in bangkok

What to Do at ChangChui:

  • Shop for unique handcrafted souvenirs and vintage items
  • Check out the contemporary art galleries

4 days itinerary in bangkok

Dinner Recommendation: For an elegant dining experience that combines history with exceptional Thai cuisine, consider Jim Thompson – A Thai Restaurant. Set within beautiful traditional Thai houses surrounded by lush gardens, this restaurant honors the legacy of the legendary “Silk King.” Expect to pay around 600-900 THB ($18-27 USD) for the main dishes. We’ve added this atmospheric dining spot to our own list for our next visit to Bangkok!

Not feeling that adventurous? No worries! ChangChui has plenty of more conventional options, too, from authentic Thai street food to craft burger joints.

Getting Back to Your Hotel: After a full day of exploration, grab a Grab taxi (Southeast Asia’s Uber) back to your hotel. You can also have the driver end your ride at the creative market, allowing you to spend some time there before taking another cab back to your accommodation. Depending on traffic and your hotel location, expect to pay 150-300 THB ($4.50-9 USD) for the ride back to central Bangkok.

5 day bangkok itinerary

Chatuchak Market is an absolute must-visit if your 3 day Bangkok itinerary falls on a weekend! This legendary weekend market is one of the world’s largest, with over 15,000 stalls spread across 35 acres. It’s basically a shopping paradise! 💫

Imagine wandering through a labyrinth of narrow lanes packed with everything from vintage clothing to handcrafted furniture and artisanal soaps to exotic pets (yes, really!). The energy here is electric, with vendors calling out to shoppers, the scent of street food wafting through the air, and treasures waiting to be discovered around every corner.

We’ve spent hours and hours wandering through these stalls and somehow, I continue to find stuff I want to buy. I could easily decorate my entire house with the home goods section.

Not Visiting on a Weekend?

If Chatuchak isn’t an option, head to Pratunam Market instead – a bustling wholesale clothing market that’s open daily. Alternatively, check out Or Tor Kor Market (across from Chatuchak), which is one of Asia’s best fresh food markets with incredible ready-to-eat options.

Afternoon: Thai Massage

5 days bangkok itinerary

After a morning of market madness, it’s time for some serious R&R! Thailand is the birthplace of Thai massage, and experiencing this ancient healing art in its homeland is an essential part of any Bangkok itinerary, especially if you’re spending 3 days in Bangkok. 💆‍♀️

Thai massage differs from Western styles. It’s like having yoga done to your body, with rhythmic pressing and stretching that leaves you feeling both relaxed and energized. While luxury spas abound in Bangkok, you’ll find fantastic, authentic massages at more affordable local establishments, too. You can also opt for traditional Western massages or even simple foot/leg massages. We love to do a couple’s massage whenever we get the chance since they are so affordable and make you feel like butter.

Morning: King Power Mahanakhon SkyWalk

two days in bangkok itinerary

Start your day with breathtaking views and a serious adrenaline rush! The King Power Mahanakhon building is Bangkok’s architectural showstopper with its distinctive “pixelated” design that looks like someone took digital bites out of a skyscraper. But the real star is the heart-stopping glass floor observation deck on the 78th floor! 😮

Picture this: stepping onto completely transparent glass with nothing but 314 meters (1,030 feet) of air between you and the ground below. It’s absolutely terrifying and thrilling all at once! Even if you’re not brave enough for the glass floor (no judgment here; I was slightly panicky when we went!), the 360-degree open-air views make for killer photos and give you a bird’s-eye perspective of everything you’ve explored so far. The perfect start to your 4 days itinerary Bangkok!

When lunchtime rolls around, head to IconSIAM, and prepare to have your mind blown! This isn’t just another shopping mall; it’s an absolute cultural phenomenon right on the banks of the Chao Phraya River. 🛍️

This is the very first mall we went to in Southeast Asia, and we were shocked by how different mall culture is compared to the US. It’s a destination, and they are honestly a great reprieve from the heat and hustle.

The highlight for food lovers is the incredible ground-floor SookSiam zone, an indoor floating market that brings together Thailand’s best regional cuisine under one roof. Imagine wandering through a perfectly designed recreation of Thailand’s waterways, with wooden boats converted into food stalls, vendors in traditional dress, and some of the best street food you’ll find anywhere in Bangkok. Note: The route may change based on the water levels. We weren’t able to clear a bridge, so we didn’t end up seeing Wat Arun or the Grand Palace. But it was still an amazing experience, and I would recommend it. Just try to time it away from the rainy season, if you can!

Bangkok Itinerary Overview: What To Expect

what to do in bangkok for 4 days

Planning a Bangkok itinerary 4 days requires some strategic thinking to make the most of this sprawling metropolis. As Thailand’s capital city, Bangkok offers an intoxicating blend of ancient temples, ultramodern malls, vibrant markets, and incredible food scenes that can easily overwhelm first-time visitors. This 4-day Bangkok itinerary is carefully crafted to give you a perfect balance of iconic sights and local experiences.

Our Bangkok itinerary covers all the must-see attractions while incorporating plenty of authentic local experiences and hidden gems that most tourists miss. 🚤

Planning your trip to bangkok

  • Weather Considerations: Bangkok is hot year-round, with temperatures usually between 77-95°F (25-35°C). Plan indoor activities during the midday heat and pack light, breathable clothing.
  • Temple Visits: Bring appropriate clothing that covers shoulders and knees (or a light scarf to wrap around). Many major temples provide cover-ups for a small fee, but bringing your own is more convenient and cute!
  • Hydration is Key: Bangkok’s heat and humidity can be draining. Carry a reusable water bottle – most hotels and shopping malls have filtered water stations for refills (pro tip: check the gym).
  • Cash vs. Cards: While major hotels, restaurants, and shopping malls accept credit cards, street food vendors, markets, and taxis generally operate on cash only. ATMs are widely available but charge foreign transaction fees (around 220 THB/$6.50 USD per withdrawal).
  • E-SIM Card: Skip the airport lines and set up your phone before you even land by purchasing an e-SIM through Airalo. These digital SIM cards are more convenient than physical ones and can be installed in seconds.

The Best Time to Visit Bangkok

what to do in bangkok for 3 days

The ideal time for a Bangkok itinerary is during the cooler dry season from November to February when temperatures hover between 75-90°F (24-32°C) with lower humidity. Visiting in late January means having weather perfect for exploring outdoor attractions without the oppressive heat that makes sightseeing challenging.

  • November-February (Dry Season): Perfect weather but peak tourist season. Expect higher prices and crowds at major attractions.
  • March-May (Hot Season): Temperatures regularly exceed 95°F (35°C). Good for bargain hunters as hotel prices drop.
  • June-October (Rainy Season): Brief but intense daily downpours with lower tourist numbers. Many attractions offer discounts, but outdoor activities may need last-minute adjustments.

Make your trip unforgettable. These Thailand Activities include our favorite food tours, temple visits, and island adventures you won’t want to miss.

Getting Around Bangkok: Transportation Guide

4 days in bangkok

Bangkok’s traffic is legendary, but the city has excellent public transportation options that help you avoid the worst congestion:

  • BTS Skytrain & MRT Subway: Clean, air-conditioned, and efficient ways to travel around central Bangkok. Fares range from 16-59 THB ($0.50-$1.75 USD) depending on distance. The Rabbit Card (similar to London’s Oyster card) costs 200 THB ($6 USD), including 100 THB credit, and makes travel much easier.
  • River Boats & Canal Taxis: One of the most scenic ways to navigate Bangkok while avoiding traffic. The Chao Phraya Express Boat connects many major attractions for just 15-20 THB ($0.45-$0.60 USD) per trip.
  • Grab App: Southeast Asia’s answer to Uber. More reliable and often cheaper than flagging down taxis. Download this before your trip.
  • Tuk-Tuks: The iconic three-wheeled vehicles are fun for short distances but require haggling skills. Agree on the price before getting in – expect to pay 100-200 THB ($3-$6 USD) for short trips.
  • Motorcycle Taxis: For the brave! Look for drivers in orange vests. They’re the fastest way to cut through traffic but obviously not the safest option. Some have helmets for you, some don’t. We’ve personally never tried them.

Essential Tips for Your Bangkok Itinerary

You’ve got the day-by-day plan, but what about those game-changing travel hacks that’ll take your Bangkok adventure from good to absolutely unforgettable? 💡

Money-Saving Tips for Bangkok

Bangkok offers incredible value, but these insider tricks will make your baht go even further! 💸

  • Follow the Locals: Skip those “English menu with photos” tourist traps and follow office workers during lunch hour. You’ll find legitimate local spots with unbeatable prices (40-80 THB/$1.20-2.40 USD per dish).
  • Transportation Hacks: Use regular river boats (15-20 THB/$0.45-0.60 USD) instead of tourist boats, and always insist on metered taxis or use the Grab app.
  • Drink Smart: Those fancy rooftop cocktails cost 350+ THB ($10.50+ USD), while convenience stores sell large Chang beers for just 55 THB ($1.65 USD). For the local experience, plastic-chair riverside spots offer drinks at a fraction of tourist prices! Plus there are no open container laws in Thailand so no need to worry!

Safety Tips & Common Scams

Stay street-smart with these essential warnings! 🚨

  • The “Closed” Scam: If someone tells you a temple is closed but offers to take you somewhere special instead, run! This classic scam leads to commission-based shopping traps.
  • Tuk-Tuk Troubles: Super cheap tuk-tuk tours (20 THB/$0.60 USD) always involve forced shopping stops. Negotiate a reasonable fare for direct transport only.
  • Taxi Rule #1: No meter, no ride. Period.

Dress Code & Cultural Etiquette

Thailand is wonderfully welcoming, but showing respect goes a long way! 🙏

  • Temple Basics: Cover shoulders, knees, and midriffs; remove shoes before entering buildings; never point feet toward Buddha images.
  • Head & Feet Awareness: Never touch someone’s head (even children’s) or use your feet to point or move objects – major cultural no-nos!
  • The Wai Greeting: Return this prayer-like hand gesture when offered, but as a visitor, you’re not expected to initiate it.

Pack light, travel right. Our Thailand Packing List has all the essentials we actually brought, from tropical outfits to must-have travel gear, so you’re ready for city nights and island days.

Best Photo Spots in Bangkok

Capture those Instagram-worthy shots that’ll make your friends just a tiny bit jealous! 📸

  • Wat Arun at Sunset: The golden glow from across the river on this temple is pure magic.
  • Mahanakhon Skywalk: Nothing says “epic travel photo,” like appearing to float 78 floors above Bangkok on the glass floor!
  • Train Market: Catch vendors quickly folding their awnings as a train passes inches from their stalls – an incredible action shot!

Remember: The best travel memories happen when you put down the camera occasionally and truly experience the moment. Some memories are meant just for you!
