Bangkok Riverside
The iconic Bangkok riverside is home to the city’s most prestigious hotels.
Perfect for: Luxury travelers, honeymooners, first-time visitors
Average price range: $120-500+/night
The Bangkok Riverside area stretches along both banks of the Chao Phraya River and houses some of the city’s most prestigious accommodations. After staying in several properties along the river, we can confidently say this is where the magic happens!
Why Stay at Bangkok Riverside:
The Bangkok Riverside area offers truly breathtaking views of the city skyline and fascinating river activity that you won’t find anywhere else in the city. We love how easy it is to access major attractions via the river boats and water taxis, which add a fun transportation element to your sightseeing adventures. Another huge perk is that most luxury hotels along the river offer complimentary boat shuttles, making it convenient to explore without dealing with Bangkok’s notorious traffic.
The incredible rooftop bars and restaurants with panoramic views make for unforgettable evening experiences, and we’ve found the calmer river breezes make Bangkok’s tropical heat much more bearable. Plus, staying riverside puts you within walking distance of ICONSIAM, Bangkok’s most luxurious mall, perfect for shopping, dining, and entertainment.

Riverside Drawbacks:
The main drawback of staying riverside is that you’ll generally pay higher prices than in other areas of Bangkok, though the views and experience can be worth the splurge. You’ll also need to rely on water taxis or other transportation to reach central Bangkok, which adds extra travel time to your adventures in the city center. Some travelers might find the riverside area somewhat isolated from authentic local neighborhoods and street life, which makes Bangkok so vibrant and interesting.

Siam Square (Ploenchit)
The bustling heart of Bangkok’s shopping district!
Perfect for: Shopping enthusiasts, first-time visitors, and those wanting a central location.
Average price range: $60-250/night
This is where we stay most often when visiting Bangkok! The Siam Square/Ploenchit area is Bangkok’s modern heart, offering unparalleled convenience, endless shopping opportunities, and excellent transportation links.
Why Stay in Siam Square/Ploenchit:
Siam Square/Ploenchit boasts the most central location in Bangkok, giving you easy access to major attractions throughout the city. We particularly love that this area is perfectly connected to the BTS Skytrain system, making city exploration a breeze without getting stuck in Bangkok’s infamous traffic jams.
This neighborhood is absolute heaven for shopping enthusiasts as it’s home to Bangkok’s best malls, including Siam Paragon, CentralWorld, and Central Embassy. Food options in this area are endless, ranging from authentic street food markets to high-end international restaurants where you can refuel after a day of exploration.
An added bonus for many travelers is that this area serves as a medical tourism hub with top hospitals and clinics nearby, making it convenient if you’re combining your trip with any treatments. The modern infrastructure and amenities throughout Siam Square/Ploenchit mean you’ll have all the conveniences of home while still experiencing vibrant Bangkok.

Siam Square Drawbacks:
The popularity of Siam Square/Ploenchit comes with some downsides, primarily how extremely crowded it can get, especially on weekends when both tourists and locals flock to the malls and attractions. We’ve found ourselves occasionally overwhelmed by the sheer number of people during peak shopping hours!
If you’re seeking an “authentic” Thai experience, this neighborhood might feel a bit too international and commercial compared to other areas of Bangkok. The prime location also commands higher prices for accommodations and dining compared to areas further from the city center.
Best Hotels in Siam Square/Ploenchit:
💎 LUXURY: The St. Regis Bangkok
Price range: $250-500+/night
Consider The St. Regis Bangkok when feeling fancy. The butler service, luxurious rooms, and prime location make this a true urban sanctuary.
🏨 MID-RANGE: DoubleTree by Hilton Bangkok Ploenchit
Price range: $80-150/night
This is our go-to Bangkok hotel! We’ve stayed at the DoubleTree Ploenchit at least five times and keep coming back for good reason. The location is perfect. It’s just a 2-minute walk from Ploenchit BTS station and a short walk to Central Embassy Mall. The rooms are spacious and modern, and the signature DoubleTree cookies at check-in are always a welcome treat!

- Spacious, modern rooms with great city views
- Excellent breakfast buffet with Western and Thai options
- Helpful staff who remember return guests
- Great value for the quality and location

Silom
Silom’s impressive skyline and vibrant streets.
Perfect for: Nightlife enthusiasts, foodies, business travelers
Average price range: $50-200/night
Silom transforms from Bangkok’s bustling business district by day to a vibrant entertainment zone by night. We love the dual personality of this neighborhood!
Why Stay in Silom:
Silom offers some of Bangkok’s most impressive rooftop bars with stunning city views, we’ve spent countless evenings watching the sunset transform into twinkling city lights from these elevated perches. Nature lovers will appreciate being close to Lumphini Park, Bangkok’s green lung, perfect for morning walks or runs before the city heat kicks in. The food scene here is incredible, with some of the best street food we’ve found in Bangkok, especially around Silom Soi 20, where local vendors serve up authentic Thai dishes at unbelievable prices.
Shopaholics will appreciate easy access to the King Power Building for duty-free shopping, while evening entertainment is sorted with the nearby Asiatique night market, easily reached via shuttle boat from Saphan Taksin pier. What we particularly love about Silom is the perfect balance it strikes between local and international dining options. You can find authentic Thai street food for lunch and world-class international cuisine for dinner, all within the same neighborhood.
Don’t miss out on our favorite modern market, Asiatique!
Silom Drawbacks:
It’s worth noting that parts of Silom include Bangkok’s red-light district, though these areas are easily avoidable and contained to specific streets (primarily Patpong). The neighborhood suffers from significant traffic congestion during rush hours, which can make getting around frustrating if you’re trying to catch an important appointment or tour.
Travelers focused primarily on Bangkok’s historical attractions may find Silom less convenient as it’s further from major tourist sites like the Grand Palace and Wat Pho, requiring longer commutes to these popular destinations.
You should also take a luxury dinner river cruise, it’s gorgeous!
Best Hotels in Silom:
💎 LUXURY: SO/ Bangkok
Price range: $180-350/night
For a design-forward luxury experience, SO/ Bangkok will blow you away. The themed rooms designed by Christian Lacroix are stunning, and the infinity pool overlooking Lumphini Park provides a perfect urban oasis.
🏨 MID-RANGE: Amara Bangkok
Price range: $70-130/night
Amara Bangkok offers excellent value in the heart of Silom. We particularly love the rooftop infinity pool with spectacular city views and the hotel’s modern, comfortable rooms.
Why we love it:
- Sleek, modern rooms with city views
- Rooftop infinity pool with skyline panoramas
- Excellent location for both business and entertainment
- Walking distance to Chong Nonsi BTS station
- Great value for the quality and amenities

Where NOT to Stay in Bangkok
While most areas in Bangkok are perfectly fine to stay in, we do have some recommendations on places to avoid based on our experiences:
⛔ Khao San Road Area
Yes, it’s famous. Yes, it’s in all the travel guides. But unless you’re a backpacker looking to party all night, the extreme noise levels, questionable hotel cleanliness, and touristy atmosphere make this a poor choice for most travelers.
The area stays loud until the early morning hours, and we’ve heard of pest issues in even mid-range accommodations here. Plus, it’s actually not well-connected to public transportation, making sightseeing more difficult.
Khao San Road is on the 4-Day Bangkok Itinerary, though! Don’t miss, but also don’t stay there.
⛔ Unbranded/Independent Budget Hotels
After a particularly unpleasant experience with cockroaches at a small independent hotel, we now stick to established brands or thoroughly vetted boutique properties in Bangkok. Quality control can be inconsistent, and what looks great in photos might be disappointing in reality.
⛔ Far-Flung Suburbs
Unless you have specific reasons to stay in Bangkok’s outer areas, we recommend avoiding accommodations too far from the city center or BTS/MRT lines. The money you save on room rates will quickly disappear in transportation costs and travel time.

Bangkok Hotel Booking Tips
After countless Bangkok trips, we’ve learned a few tricks for securing the best accommodation:
- Book direct for perks: Many hotels offer free breakfast, upgrades, or late checkout when booking directly
- Join loyalty programs: Even if it’s your first stay, membership often means better rooms and even complimentary breakfast
- Check hotel location carefully: Make sure it’s within walking distance of BTS/MRT stations
- Request high floors: Bangkok can be noisy, so higher rooms are usually quieter
- Always confirm airport transfer prices: Some hotels advertise “free airport pickup” but charge for return
- Check for renovation notices: Many Bangkok hotels undergo frequent renovations
Pack light, travel right. Our Thailand Packing List has all the essentials we actually brought, from tropical outfits to must-have travel gear, so you’re ready for city nights and island days.

Bangkok Accommodation FAQs
Is it better to stay near the airport in Bangkok?
Not unless you have a very early flight or late arrival. Bangkok’s airports are 30-45 minutes from the city center, and you’ll miss out on the Bangkok experience by staying near the airports.
How many days should I stay in Bangkok?
We recommend 3-5 days minimum to get a good feel for the city without rushing. This gives you time to see major attractions, explore different neighborhoods, and enjoy the amazing food scene.
Is Bangkok safe for tourists?
Yes! Despite being a massive city, Bangkok is generally very safe for tourists. As with any major city, use common sense precautions, but violent crime against tourists is extremely rare.
Should I stay near the Grand Palace/Old City?
While it puts you close to historical sites, we don’t typically recommend staying in the Old City unless you’re primarily interested in temples and historical attractions. The area is less convenient for modern amenities and lacks BTS/MRT connections.
The Final Verdict
After years of exploring Bangkok and staying in dozens of accommodations across the city, we confidently recommend Riverside for luxury experiences, Siam Square/Ploenchit for convenience and shopping, and Silom for a good balance of business and pleasure.
Where to stay in Bangkok, Thailand ultimately comes down to your travel style, budget, and priorities. The beauty of this vibrant city is that there truly is something for everyone—from $20 hostels to $500+ luxury suites with butler service.
