Traditional Albanian cuisine here is served family-style, and we loved how each meal was filled with home-cooked flavors and warm hospitality. Top Restaurants in Berat, Albania

1. Homemade Food Lili

If we had to choose just one favorite restaurant in all of Albania, it would hands down be Homemade Food Lili located in Old Town Berat. This isn’t just the best food we’ve had in Berat, it’s one of the most memorable dining experiences we’ve had anywhere.

Lili runs the restaurant with his wife out of their own home, and from the moment you walk through the gate into their small backyard, it feels like you’ve been welcomed into the family. There are only about 12 to 16 seats total on rickety wooden tables, so every dinner feels intimate and special. Lili himself works the floor every night (closed on Sundays) and somehow still has the energy to entertain every table with stories, laughter, and genuine warmth. His superpower is making everyone smile and remembering everyone’s name. His wife does all the cooking behind the scenes, and together they create pure magic.

The food is traditional, rustic, and absolutely delicious. There’s a small menu based on what they have available that day, and we always end up ordering one of everything. It’s usually the same dishes, but we highly recommend the baked lamb in yogurt, the meatball, and the stuffed tomato with rice (pro tip: mix it with the ricotta dish – delicious). The only drinks available are water and red wine (made by Lili’s father), and honestly, that’s all you need. Oh, and of course, the complimentary homemade raki that Lili ends every meal with.

We’ve been twice now, and Lili remembered us by name the second time. That kind of hospitality, paired with food this good, is rare. It’s no surprise this is our #1 pick. If you’re visiting Berat, don’t even think about skipping it.

2. Temi Albanian Food

Another one of our favorite restaurants in all of Albania is Temi Albanian Food, a cozy family-run spot tucked right into the castle walls of Berat. It’s a perfect place to stop for lunch while exploring the fortress, with shaded outdoor seating along the narrow cobblestone streets.

What makes Temi stand out (besides the great food) is their amazing hospitable service. The family who runs it is incredibly kind, and they somehow remembered us from our first visit over a year and a half earlier. Their daughter, who speaks English, chatted with us about her university life and made us feel right at home. She even surprised us with a free dessert, which was as sweet as the gesture itself.

The food is fresh, flavorful, and full of love. We tried five dishes for four people and we’re plenty full for the afternoon. Be sure to try their meatballs in sauce and the stuffed peppers. We’ve eaten here more than once and would happily return again and again. If you’re visiting the castle, don’t miss it, this little gem is the definition of a hidden treasure.

They make their olive oil by hand and we find it absolutely delicious, we even asked to buy a bottle for home! They also make their raki homemade if you are interested to try it, this is a good spot.

3. Mbrica Restaurant Traditional Food

Just across from Temi, also nestled within the Berat castle walls, you’ll find Mbrica Traditional Food. This is a great spot to catch sunset (even though it’s facing the opposite direction, trust me), with stunning views that stretch out over the mountains. It’s peaceful, scenic, and the perfect setting for a cozy traditional meal.

We loved the food here, especially the baked cheese, which came out bubbling and golden. We also ordered the grilled red pepper sauce (amazing with fries), the Mbrica casserole, and of course, a glass of the house red wine. To top it off, we tried their homemade flavored rakis, one with pomegranate and another with nuts. They were both surprisingly smooth and full of flavor.

But what really made this place special was the owner. He went so out of his way to be nice to us. He offered us cold water as we left “just to stay hydrated,” and even reopened the restaurant just for us when we showed up late. He let us eat, enjoy the view, and even come back to pay later. It was such a kind gesture and just another reminder of how warm and welcoming the people in Berat are.

PS they are also a boutique hotel and guest house. And with those views and hospitality, I would have to imagine it’s a great place to stay!

4. Zonja Gjene

Zonja Gjene is a charming little spot right along the main street by the river, with casual outdoor seating perfect for people-watching and lingering over a long meal. We ended up staying here for hours, just chatting, sipping wine, and enjoying the relaxed vibe.

The food was delicious, but the real standout? The baked cheese. It seriously changed our lives, we loved it so much, we went out and bought the same kind of dish so we could try recreating it at home. Paired with a liter of the house red wine, it was the perfect way to wind down the day.

5. Iljesa

Guest House lljesa is a peaceful little gem tucked along the castle walls, with an outdoor patio that overlooks the mountains and city below. Shaded by trees and set just far enough from the bustle of the castle, it’s the kind of place that immediately makes you want to slow down.

We didn’t eat here, but we instantly fell in love with the vibe. The setting is beautiful, the atmosphere relaxed, and we could’ve easily spent the whole afternoon sipping drinks and soaking up the view. Whether you’re looking for a quiet escape or a scenic spot to unwind, Iljesa has that effortlessly charming, no-rush energy that makes Berat so special.

6. City Grill Berat Bar&Restaurant

City Grill Berat is located right along the Bulevardi Republika so it’s a great location for a lunch. It has a cute indoor dining area and we especially loved the quirky touch of the fake windows in the back. It’s a popular spot, especially for pizza, which seemed to be what most tables were ordering.

We gave the pizza a try, but honestly, it wasn’t our favorite and it took quite a while to come out. That said, the local Albanian dishes we ordered totally redeemed the experience. The grilled veggies with balsamic glaze were so good we talked about them for days, and the chicken shish kebabs were juicy and flavorful.

If you’re here, we’d recommend skipping the pizza and going for the traditional dishes instead since they’re the real stars of the menu. They also served up good cold beers with frosty mugs, so that’s always a win.

7. Balkoni Gorices

berat where to eat

Located on the Gorica side of the river, overlooking the historic Gorica Bridge, Ballkoni Goricës is a great spot to take a break and soak in the view. We didn’t eat here, but we stopped in for drinks and really enjoyed the shaded rooftop patio overlooking the city.

It’s the kind of place that feels like a hidden escape from the midday sun, quiet, relaxed, and with just enough breeze to cool down. Whether you’re crossing the bridge or wandering the Gorica side, it’s worth a stop for a refreshing drink and a peaceful view of Berat below.
