How to Get to Phi Phi Island from Phuket and Krabi

ferry from phi phi to krabi

Reaching the Phi Phi Islands is straightforward, with regular ferry services from both Phuket and Krabi. During our last visit in 2023, we found the most reliable operators to be:

  • From Phuket: Ferries depart from Rassada Pier, with morning departures at 8:30 AM and 1:30 PM, taking about 2 hours (400-600 THB one-way/$12-18).
  • From Krabi/Ao Nang: Departures from Klong Jirad Pier at 9:00 AM and 1:30 PM, taking about 1.5 hours (350-450 THB one-way/$10-13).
  • From Koh Lanta: One daily departure at 9:00 AM, taking about 1 hour (400 THB one-way/$12).

Pro tip: Book your ferry tickets at least a day in advance during high season (November-April), especially morning departures, as they can sell out. We use the 12Go Asia website for advance bookings.

Best Time to Visit

bangkok phi phi island

The ideal time for your Phi Phi Island itinerary is during the dry season from November to April when the weather is sunny and the sea is calm. Here’s a quick breakdown:

  • November-February (High Season): Perfect weather with minimal rain, but expect more crowds and higher prices.
  • March-April (Shoulder Season): Our personal favorite time to visit! It’s still great weather with slightly fewer tourists.
  • May-October (Rainy Season): Occasional heavy downpours and rougher seas, but significantly fewer tourists and lower prices. Some boat tours may be canceled due to weather.

Choosing the right accommodation is crucial for your Phi Phi Island itinerary, as the location determines your access to activities. The main areas are:

  • Tonsai Village: The central hub near the pier, bustling with restaurants, shops, and nightlife. Suitable for social travelers.
  • Long Beach: A 15-minute walk from Tonsai, offering a quieter atmosphere with better swimming. This is our favorite spot to stay!
  • Laem Tong: On the northern tip, secluded and peaceful, accessible by resort long tail boat transfers.

Arriving on Phi Phi Island feels like stepping into a postcard! As your ferry approaches the stunning bay surrounded by towering limestone cliffs, you’ll immediately understand why creating a solid Phi Phi Island itinerary is essential, there’s so much beauty to explore, and you’ll want to make the most of every moment. We’ve seriously never seen such turquoise-colored water before!

Morning Arrival and Setup

The ferry will dock at Tonsai Pier, the main arrival point for your Phi Phi Island itinerary. The best ferry option is typically the 8:30 AM departure from Phuket, arriving around 10:30 AM. It’s the perfect timing to kick off day one!

Here’s what to expect on arrival:

  • The pier will be bustling with travelers, locals, and hotel representatives 👋
  • You’ll pay a 20 THB ($0.60) national park environmental fee upon arrival, CASH ONLY (keep the receipt for your entire stay)
  • If your hotel offers pickup service, look for their sign; otherwise, most accommodations are within walking distance
  • No motorized vehicles on Phi Phi means you’ll be walking or using a hotel luggage cart 🚶‍♀️

Since most check-ins aren’t until 2 PM, here’s the game plan:

  • Drop your luggage at your hotel’s reception
  • Grab a quick breakfast at Papaya Restaurant near the pier (their fresh fruit smoothies are absolute lifesavers after the ferry ride!) 🥭
  • Take a short walking tour around Tonsai Village to orient yourself

Afternoon Beach Discovery

Once checked in and refreshed, the afternoon of your first day on your Phi Phi Island itinerary is perfect for exploring the nearby beaches. After all, this is one of the main things to do in Koh Phi Phi:

Long Beach (Ao Phra Nang)

best phi phi beach

A 15-20 minute walk from Tonsai Village or a quick longtail boat ride (100 THB / $3 per person), Long Beach offers:

  • Powdery white sand and clear turquoise waters that’ll make your Instagram followers jealous
  • Less crowded atmosphere than Tonsai
  • Great swimming with a gradual slope into the sea 🏊‍♂️
  • Several small beach bars and restaurants with reasonably priced drinks

Spending about 2 hours here swimming and relaxing is ideal before continuing your beach exploration.

Loh Dalum Beach

attractions in phi phi island

On the opposite side of the island from the pier (just a 5-minute walk across the island’s narrow center):

  • Wide, shallow bay with stunning views that’ll take your breath away
  • Perfect for wading and watching longtail boats glide across the bay
  • More lively atmosphere with beachfront bars playing chill music
  • Great spot for people watching and soaking in the island vibes

Loh Dalum is the perfect spot to grab a cold Chang beer (80-100 THB / $2.40-3) and watch the afternoon unfold – a peaceful introduction to the rhythm of island life that’s essential to any Phi Phi Island itinerary.

Evening Activities 🌙

beaches on phi phi

As the sun begins to set on the first day of your Phi Phi Island itinerary, it’s time to experience Phi Phi’s evening vibe:

Dinner Options:

  • Papaya Restaurant – Fresh seafood at reasonable prices (200-400 THB / $6-12 per dish)
  • Grand PP Arcade – For authentic Thai food away from tourist prices
  • Cosmic Restaurant – Great vegetarian options with amazing fruit shakes (180-280 THB / $5.40-8.40)

After dinner, explore Tonsai Village’s walking streets, where you’ll find:

  • Local crafts and souvenir shops (great for picking up beach essentials you might have forgotten)
  • The night market near the Tsunami Memorial with local street food that smells incredible
  • Casual beach bars with fire shows starting around 9 PM (truly mesmerizing!) 🔥

For those looking for a chill evening on your Phi Phi Island itinerary, grabbing a beach mat from a local shop (about 100 THB / $3) and sitting on Loh Dalum Beach watching the stars appear over the bay is pure magic, the perfect end to your first day!

Make your trip unforgettable. These Thailand Activities include our favorite food tours, temple visits, and island adventures you won’t want to miss.

Day 2: Adventure Day on Your Phi Phi Island Itinerary

Day 2 of your Phi Phi Island itinerary is dedicated to exploring all the things to do in Phi Phi Island that made these islands famous worldwide. Wake up early, this will be your most adventure-packed day!

Maya Bay Morning Tour

best beaches in phi phi island

No Phi Phi Island trip would be complete without visiting the legendary Maya Bay, made famous by the movie “The Beach.” After its closure for ecological recovery, it reopened with stricter visitor regulations that actually make for a better experience. We highly recommend booking a private tour via long tail boat!

Best Approach:

  • Book a “Maya Bay Early Bird Tour” that departs around 6:30-7:00 AM
  • These private tours cost slightly more (1,000-1,200 THB / $30-40 per person minimum) but are worth it to beat the day tour crowds
  • Morning light makes for stunning photos of the emerald bay
best beach in phi phi thailand

What to Expect:

  • You can access the shore of Maya Bay, but you cannot get in the water past your knees
  • Maximum 375 visitors at any time (compared to 5,000+ daily before closure)
  • An entry fee of 400 THB ($12) is included in most tour prices

The incredible conservation efforts have allowed coral and marine life to return to the bay. The early morning light filtering through the limestone cliffs creates a magical atmosphere, definitely worth the early wake-up call on your Phi Phi Island itinerary!

Snorkeling Adventures

best time to visit phi phi thailand

After Maya Bay, most Phi Phi island tours continue to prime snorkeling spots around the islands, an essential part of any Phi Phi Island itinerary

Top Snorkeling Locations:

  • Shark Point – Spot blacktip reef sharks in shallow waters (completely safe as they’re not interested in humans!)
  • Pileh Lagoon – Emerald green waters surrounded by towering cliffs
  • Loh Samah Bay – Crystal clear waters with vibrant coral gardens

Snorkeling Tips:

The marine life around Phi Phi is extraordinary, colorful parrotfish, sea turtles, reef sharks, and countless tropical fish make for unforgettable underwater experiences.

Pack light, travel right. Our Thailand Packing List has all the essentials we actually brought, from tropical outfits to must-have travel gear, so you’re ready for city nights and island days.

Island Hopping Afternoon

phi phi islands tours

Your Phi Phi tour will likely continue with visits to several iconic spots around the islands:

Pi Leh Bay

This stunning emerald lagoon is surrounded by soaring limestone cliffs. The water here is typically calm and incredibly clear, perfect for swimming or just floating in awe at the natural beauty.

Viking Cave

While you can’t enter the cave itself (it’s home to birds’ nest harvesters), the boat will slow down for a good view of this interesting cultural site where locals collect the prized ingredients for birds’ nest soup.

Monkey Bay

Home to cheeky long-tailed macaques who’ve become accustomed to tourists. Important safety tips:

  • Don’t bring food or visible water bottles
  • Keep phones and cameras secure
  • Maintain a respectful distance, these are wild animals
  • Never feed the monkeys (it’s harmful to their health and behavior)

Bamboo Island

Many full-day tours include a stop at this pristine island with powdery white sand and excellent snorkeling opportunities. It’s the perfect spot to relax after a morning of adventures.

Chill evening

For dinner after a big day of exploring, you’re in for a treat! One of our favorite discoveries was ACQUA Restaurant. It’s a hidden gem that deserves a spot in your dinner plans.

Picture this: fresh-caught seafood, ambient lighting, and a cute Mediterranean vibe. It’s slightly pricier than other spots (mains around 350-500 THB / $10-15), but the quality justifies every baht spent.

After an action-packed day, you should keep the evening relaxed with a massage at one of the many parlors in Tonsai Village (prices range from 300-600 THB / $9-18 for a one-hour Thai massage). Trust me, your muscles will thank you after all that swimming and hiking.

Day 3: Hidden Gems of Your Phi Phi Island Itinerary

beaches in phi phi island

The final day of your Phi Phi Island itinerary is all about discovering those special spots that most tourists miss! This is where the magic really happens, away from the crowds, experiencing the authentic island vibes that make Phi Phi truly special. 🏝️

Morning Viewpoint Hike

diving phi phi island

If you’re up for an early morning, there’s no better way to start off the third day of your Phi Phi Island itinerary than with a sunrise hike to the famous viewpoint.

From this viewpoint, you’ll see the iconic view of Phi Phi’s twin bays separated by a narrow strip of land. It’s the perfect photo opportunity and appears on countless Thailand travel brochures. Plus, you’ll practically have the place to yourself before 8 AM! We still have yet to do this hike since it’s always so HOT when we visit.

Viewpoint Tips:

  • Start hiking around 7 AM to beat both the heat and crowds
  • The trail starts near the Tsunami Memorial and is well-marked
  • Bring 30 THB ($0.90) cash for the entrance fee and extra for water at the top
  • It takes about 20-30 minutes to reach Viewpoint #1 (the most famous)
  • The viewpoint trail offers three different levels, each with increasingly spectacular views

Make your trip unforgettable. These Thailand Activities include our favorite food tours, temple visits, and island adventures you won’t want to miss.

Secret Beaches Expedition

Now for the BEST part of your Phi Phi Island itinerary: hunting down those hidden beaches that don’t make it into the standard tour packages! 🤫

How to Find Secret Spots:

  • Hire a private longtail boat for a half-day (1,500-2,000 THB / $45-60 per person)
  • Chat with your boatman about less-visited beaches – they know all the good stuff!
  • Depart around 9 AM to maximize your morning adventure.

Must-Visit Hidden Gems:

best resorts phi phi island

Nui Beach
This tiny slice of paradise sits on the eastern side of the island. With just a small stretch of powdery sand tucked between dramatic rocks, it feels like your own private cove. The water here is exceptionally clear, and the snorkeling is fantastic!

Pak Nam Beach
Located on the northeastern tip of Phi Phi Don, this remote beach requires a bit of effort to reach, which is exactly why it remains so pristine! Your longtail boat can drop you here for an hour of uninterrupted bliss. The shallow, crystal-clear water stretches forever, and you’ll likely share the entire beach with just a handful of other adventurous souls.

Ao Toh Ko
This secluded bay on the east coast feels worlds away from bustling Tonsai. The coral reef starts at the shoreline and extends outward, making it incredible for snorkeling. The best part? The tiny beachfront restaurant serves the freshest grilled fish (250-350 THB / $7.50-10.50) you’ll find anywhere on the island!

Pro tip: Pack a small dry bag with water, a quick dry towel, sunscreen, and snorkel gear. Most secret beaches don’t have facilities, which is precisely why they’re so magical! Also, bring cash to pay your boatman, no card terminals in the middle of the Andaman Sea! 😉

Final Afternoon in Paradise

Return to your hotel after your morning beach expedition to freshen up and pack if you’re departing today. If your ferry isn’t until later, use these precious final hours wisely:

Last-Minute Shopping:

  • Tonsai Village has cute boutiques for sarongs, handmade jewelry, and beachwear
  • The shops near the pier offer reasonably priced souvenirs (but be ready to haggle!)
  • Don’t miss picking up some dried mango (60-80 THB / $1.80-2.40), the perfect snack for your journey home

Quick Bites: For a quick lunch before departure, grab a delicious banana pancake (60 THB / $1.80) from one of the street stalls, or try a fresh fruit smoothie (80 THB / $2.40).

Farewell Evening (If You're Staying)

beaches on phi phi

If your Phi Phi Island itinerary includes one last night, make it count with a perfect farewell evening:

Sunset at Loh Dalum: The western-facing Loh Dalum Bay puts on an absolute show at sunset. Grab a beach mat and some takeaway food, or a bean bag chair and a drink, and watch nature’s most spectacular light show paint the sky in shades of pink, orange, and gold.

Special Dinner Suggestion: Treat yourself to something special for your final dinner! Find some delicious seafood and pair it with a cold Singha beer and have the ideal farewell feast!

Nightcap With a View: End your Phi Phi Island itinerary with a cocktail at the Phi Phi Viewpoint Resort’s rooftop bar. Their passion fruit mojitos (250 THB / $7.50) are legendary, and the village lights twinkling below create the perfect backdrop for reminiscing about your island adventures.

Stay in the best spots. Our curated Thailand Hotels feature everything from chic Bangkok stays to dreamy beachfront escapes.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days in Phi Phi Island is enough?

You can techinically take a day trip tour from Phuket or Krabi, but we highly recommend staying two nights to see all the beauty of the Phi Phi Islands fully.

Can you visit Phi Phi Island on your own?

YES! 100%. Every time we have visited, we have opted for a DIY adventure. Though there are plenty of tours, it’s a relatively easy process to book your own ferry/speedboat ticket and then book a private long tail boat tour (whether for a day or a few nights).

Can you do Phi Phi Islands in one day?

Yes. It’s definitely possible. You’ll be able to take one hour ferry there and back and still get in a solid 4-6 hour long tail boat tour. You may even have time for some shopping or food. But I can’t understate the beauty. It’s gorgeous and you’ll want more time. TRUST ME.

Is Phi Phi Island Worth Visiting?

It’s actually one of our favorite places in the whole world (and we’ve been to A LOT). The water is so beautiful here and the sand so white. If you plan your trip right, it’s definitely worth visiting.

Is Phi Phi Island Expensive?

For the level of beauty and remote tropical-ness? No. But it’s not as cheap as the rest of Thailand and is getting more expensive every year as it grows in popularity. But anything compared to US standards is affordable, so this is a steal.

What is Phi Phi Island famous for?

Phi Phi Leh was made famous from the Leonardo DiCaprio movie, “The Beach.” The stunning backdrop of Maya Bay was an iconic scene from the movie, and when you step onto that beach, you’ll get it.
