Plan your perfect Sorrento itinerary with this 3-day guide to Capri, the Amalfi Coast, Pompeii, and the best of Sorrento itself.
If you’re dreaming about a trip to southern Italy, a 3-day Sorrento itinerary might just be the best decision you ever make for your travel bucket list! Sorrento sits on the cliffs above the Bay of Naples, giving you easy access to Capri, the Amalfi Coast, and Pompeii, all while being a charming, walkable town with incredible food, stunning views, and that unmistakable Italian coastal energy.
This guide walks you through exactly how to spend three days here, day by day.
chapters:
Day 1 - Discovering Sorrento Itself 🍋
We recommend spending your first full day exploring Sorrento at your own pace. The town is compact and fully walkable, making it perfect for getting your bearings while covering a lot of ground.
Morning: Exploring Sorrento's Historic Center
Start your morning in the heart of the old town. Piazza Tasso is the central square and the beating pulse of Sorrento, and we suggest getting there early before the midday crowds settle in. Pull up a chair at one of the outdoor cafes, order an espresso, and soak it all in!
From there, wander into the surrounding historic streets:
- Corso Italia is the main strip, lined with ceramic shops, limoncello boutiques, and local specialty stores
- Valle dei Mulini (Valley of the Mills) is a striking ravine right in the center of town, where ancient grain mills sit frozen in time, partially reclaimed by lush vegetation
- Cattedrale dei Santi Filippo e Giacomo showcases a beautiful mix of Romanesque and Baroque architecture and is well worth a quick stop
- Chiostro di San Francesco, an 8th-century cloister with lush vines and stunning arches, is open daily from 9 AM to 6 PM and costs nothing to enter.
Keep in mind that most indoor attractions follow the traditional Italian riposo, closing between roughly 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM, so plan your indoor visits for earlier in the morning.
Afternoon: Sorrento's Coastal Highlights ☀️
After a leisurely lunch, try the town’s classic gnocchi alla Sorrentina! Then head to Villa Comunale, the clifftop public park with sweeping panoramic views over the Bay of Naples. On a clear day, you can see Mount Vesuvius rising on the horizon, and admission is totally free.
From there, make your way down to Marina Grande, the fishing village nestled below the cliffside town. This is Sorrento at its most authentic:
- Colorful boats bobbing in the water
- Family-run restaurants lining the waterfront
- A laidback, local vibe that feels miles away from the busier center above
We suggest spending a couple of hours here with a fresh seafood aperitivo at one of the waterside tavernas. Pure bliss!
If you still have energy, the Museo Correale di Terranova is worth a visit. It’s housed in an 18th-century residence with a garden terrace overlooking the bay and covers Sorrentine history and decorative arts. Entrance fees apply, and children under 10 get in free.
Evening: Your First Night in Sorrento 🌅
Your first evening sets the tone for the whole trip. Start with an aperitivo at one of the rooftop bars near the historic center and watch the Bay of Naples turn golden at sunset. Then join in the passeggiata, the beloved evening stroll along Corso Italia as the locals come out to see and be seen. Dinner in the old town is a must, and don’t skip the limoncello digestivo afterward!
Only 24 hours in Sorrento? Here’s how to make every moment count.
Day 2 - Capri, the Amalfi Coast, or Both! 🛥️
Day 2 is your big day trip day, and you’ve got a few excellent options depending on your pace and interests. Sorrento is honestly one of the best bases in all of southern Italy for exploring both the Amalfi Coast and the island of Capri.
Option A: Combined Capri and Amalfi Coast Private Tour
For travelers who want to see both destinations in a single day, we recommend the Discover Capri and Amalfi Coast on a Private Tour from Sorrento. This is a great pick if you prefer a seamless guided experience over navigating public transportation on a busy summer day.
The tour typically covers:
- Stops along the Amalfi Coast, including Positano and Amalfi
- Dedicated time on Capri with guided highlights
- With logistics covered, you can focus on enjoying the experience
This option suits fast-paced travelers or anyone visiting with family who just wants everything taken care of.
Save this for your Italy trip! These 13 things will steal your heart in Sorrento.
Option B: A Full Day on Capri ⛵
If you’d rather give Capri the full day it deserves, we suggest booking the Full Day Capri and Anacapri Tour from Sorrento. Ferries depart from Marina Piccola in Sorrento, with tickets available at the port. Go early to beat the crowds!
Top highlights to look forward to:
- The Blue Grotto, a sea cave famous for its glowing azure light (access depends on weather and sea conditions, so check on the day)
- Capri Town and the Piazzetta, perfect for exploring on foot and some seriously good people-watching
- Mount Solaro chairlift in Anacapri for breathtaking panoramic views over the island and sea
- Gardens of Augustus for sweeping views down to the iconic Faraglioni rock formations before you catch the ferry back from Marina Piccola
Option C: A Full Day on the Amalfi Coast 🏖️
For a slower, more immersive experience, the Positano and Amalfi Boat Trip with Transfer from Sorrento is a gorgeous way to see the coast from the water. Prefer to go DIY? The SITA bus runs along the coast road, though it gets crowded. Driving these narrow, winding roads yourself is generally not recommended.
The three towns you’ll want to hit:
- Positano is the most photographed spot on the coast, with colorful houses cascading down to the beach and an electric resort energy.
- Amalfi has a magnificent cathedral surrounded by narrow streets full of lemon-themed shops and fresh seafood restaurants.
- Ravello sits higher in the hills, much quieter, with terraced villa gardens and views that have inspired writers and composers for centuries.
Evening: Returning to Sorrento 🍝
Whichever option you chose, end the evening with dinner at Marina Grande. The seafood restaurants along the waterfront are some of the most atmospheric in all of Sorrento, and after a full day out, there is nothing better than sitting by the water as the lights of Naples flicker across the bay.

Day 3 - Pompeii 🌋
Day 3 takes you inland for one of the most compelling historical experiences in all of Europe. Both Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius are very doable day trips from Sorrento!
Morning: Visiting Ancient Pompeii
For the most hassle-free experience, we recommend booking the Full-Day Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius Tour from Sorrento, which includes all transportation and guided access to both sites.
If you’d rather go independently, here’s what you need to know:
- Take the Circumvesuviana train from Sorrento Station, located opposite Piazza Angelina Lauro
- Trains run roughly every 30 minutes, and the journey takes about 30 minutes
- Tickets cost around €2.60 (~$3.00) from Sorrento to Pompeii
- The station drops you right at the entrance to the archaeological site
- Want more comfort? The Campania Express runs on the same line with guaranteed seating, A/C, and luggage space, typically from mid-March to mid-October
- Buy your Pompeii entrance tickets online in advance, especially in peak season, to skip the lines
Inside the ruins, don’t miss the Forum, the Amphitheatre, the Garden of the Fugitives, and the Villa of the Mysteries. Budget at least two to three hours. And here’s a great tip: admission is free on the first Sunday of every month!
Afternoon: Mount Vesuvius Experience 🏔️
From Pompeii, buses connect to the slopes of Mount Vesuvius for the hike up to the crater. Here’s what to expect:
- The hike to the crater rim is moderate in difficulty and takes about 30 minutes each way
- From above, you can take in expansive views of the Bay of Naples, along with the Sorrentine Peninsula and Capri
- On the way back down, several estates on Vesuvius’ slopes offer tastings of Lacryma Christi, the local volcanic wine. Highly recommended!
Final Evening in Sorrento 🥂
Return to Sorrento for one last special evening. We suggest treating yourself to a nicer dinner tonight since it’s your last night! The old town has some excellent restaurants known for refined takes on Neapolitan cuisine. Afterward, grab any final souvenirs from the ceramic and limoncello shops along Corso Italia and find a quiet spot with a view of the bay to soak in those final moments.

Practical Tips for Your Sorrento Itinerary 📋
Best Time to Visit Sorrento
Spring and early autumn are hands-down the best times to visit. Here’s a quick seasonal breakdown:
- April through June: Temperatures average between 59–72°F (15–22°C), the lemon trees are blooming, and crowds are lighter than in summer. This is our top recommendation!
- July and August: Peak tourist season with temps up to 88°F (32°C). Lively and fun, but expect higher prices and bigger crowds at every major site
- September and October: Warm sea, comfortable temperatures, fewer tourists, and slightly lower prices. A really sweet spot!
- November through March: Quietest and most affordable period. Some businesses close for the season, but it’s great for budget travelers who don’t mind a slower pace

FAQs
Is 3 days enough for Sorrento?
Three days give you enough time to explore Sorrento itself and take two solid day trips. You won’t see absolutely everything, but you’ll hit all the highlights. If you have flexibility, four or five days lets you add Herculaneum or the island of Ischia to the mix.
What’s the best month for a Sorrento itinerary?
We recommend April, May, late September, and October. The weather is great, crowds are manageable, and prices are more reasonable than peak summer. These months are also ideal for day trips to Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast before the heat gets intense.
Can I see Capri, the Amalfi Coast, and Pompeii in 3 days?
Yes! That’s exactly what this itinerary is built for. Day 2 covers Capri, the Amalfi Coast, or both on a combined private tour, and Day 3 focuses on Pompeii and Vesuvius. Want to do Capri and the Amalfi Coast on separate days? Add a fourth day, and you’re golden.
Is it better to stay in Sorrento or Positano?
Sorrento all the way for most travelers! It has great transport links, a wider range of accommodation at all price points, and a lively town center. Positano is absolutely stunning, but it’s much better as a day trip destination since the roads are challenging and prices are steep.
Do I need to rent a car for my Sorrento itinerary?
Nope! The Circumvesuviana train serves Pompeii; ferries and boat tours cover Capri and the Amalfi Coast; and the SITA bus runs the coastal road. Driving the Amalfi Coast is notoriously stressful in peak season, so skip the rental car stress and just enjoy the ride!
