dubai travel cost

Welcome to our comprehensive breakdown of our Dubai travel cost. As a couple who’s been on the road for over four years, we’ve had our fair share of unique travel experiences. However, our trip to Dubai, the glimmering jewel of the Middle East, was our first foray into this destination. In this post, we’ll provide a detailed account of our expenses during our visit, offering a perspective that balances our pursuit of comfort with our keen sense of budgeting.

We’ll cover Dubai travel cost, best time to visit Dubai, and more!

As a quick note, we are not backpackers; we rarely stay in hostels and are very cautious with street food. We like to save money where possible, but we certainly spend it on what is important to us.

This is not representative of what you will spend in Dubai, even for the same period of time or season. This is merely an overview of what we spent and some of our tips and reasons for the amounts. Please use it as a guide to your future trip to the United Arab Emirates!

Best time to Visit Dubai

dubai travel cost

We visited Dubai in August, and quite frankly, the heat was unbearable. We could only be outside for a maximum of ten minutes. Although you may find cheaper rates during this time, we don’t really advise traveling in the summer months due to the extreme temperatures. Even the sea was too warm to enjoy. We couldn’t even fully enjoy a lot of the free outdoor activities due to the heat. And we definitley couldn’t walk anywhere.

Ideally, the best time to visit Dubai is between November and April when the weather is cooler and more conducive for outdoor activities. But you will find higher prices. Try traveling in the shoulder seasons to get a good mix of both worlds.

This post on Dubai travel cost is just one part of our larger one week trip to the UAE. We started our journey in Dubai, spending the first four nights exploring the city’s unique blend of modern architecture and traditional culture. We then moved on to Abu Dhabi for the next four nights, where we experienced its rich history and luxurious lifestyle.

Dubai Travel Cost

Total: $495

We found a budget airline for our round trip from Tirana, where we live, to the United Arab Emirates. Although our first destination was Dubai, we chose to land in Abu Dhabi as it was the cheaper option. Conveniently, affordable transportation options are available between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, with the journey taking approximately 1.5 to 2 hours each way. More details on the cost are in the Transportation Section

If you’re traveling from the U.S., you can find heavily discounted round-trip airfare on FareDrop. This platform often provides great deals on flights, making your Dubai travel more affordable.

Entry Fees

Total: $0

As of our visit, there were no specific entry requirements or fees for US citizens traveling to the UAE. However, these conditions can change frequently due to various factors. You can check with your government’s embassy program or, even easier, with iVisa

Total: $353

Average: $88 per night

During our stay in Dubai, we spent a total of $353 on accommodations, averaging $88 per night. Although this is fairly high for our nightly budget, this was an awesome find in the UAE. This was primarily influenced by the time of year (read: no one visits in summer for a reason) and our Diamond Hilton Honors status.

We had the privilege of staying at the Waldorf Astoria Dubai Palm Jumeirah for two nights, a truly luxurious experience. For the other two nights, we lodged at the Hilton Dubai Al Habtoor City, which also offered excellent services and amenities.

Food & Drink

Total: $170

Average: $42.50 per day

Average: $21.25 per person per day

Over four days, our food and drink expenses mostly consisted of local street food and fast-casual meals, with shawarma being a staple in our diet. We made a conscious effort to explore local eateries, relishing the authentic flavors of Dubai. Furthermore, being Hilton Diamond members, we enjoyed complimentary breakfast at our hotels, which considerably reduced our food costs. Thus, our strategic dining choices enabled us to enjoy the local cuisine without significantly inflating our budget.

We frequently relied on Uber for transportation during our stay—it was quite popular and extremely convenient. The cost of each Uber ride varied depending on the distance and traffic, but on average, it ranged from $10 to $20 per trip.

Since we flew into Abu Dhabi Airport (AUH) and stayed in Dubai, we used a bus service to get back and forth. It was reasonably priced at $10 per person per way. After our arrival at DXB airport, we chose to use Uber to reach our destination at the Waldorf Astoria Dubai Palm. This particular trip was a bit pricier, costing us $46, but considering the comfort and convenience of traveling late at night, it was the best option for us.

Total: $68

Our excursion expenses during our 4-day stay in Dubai were quite minimal since we primarily engaged in free activities. This included visiting the Dubai Mall, strolling along the Dubai Marina, and exploring the historic neighborhood of Al Fahidi, all of which offered rich experiences without any cost. However, we did choose to spend a bit on an exciting roller skating experience at Roll DXB, which added a unique and fun element to our trip.

Overall, our excursion costs were kept significantly low thanks to the abundance of cost-free activities in the vibrant city of Dubai. Obviously, there are plenty of options for fun paid activities in Dubai. Some affordable options might be a desert safari, the Global Village, or the Dubai Frame.

Our personal expenses in Dubai were mainly driven by shopping, as the city is a renowned shopping destination with a ton of unique options. This includes the world’s largest mall, the Dubai Mall, which offers an extensive range of retail stores, dining options, and entertainment activities. There are also traditional souks where a variety of local goods and souvenirs can be found. Overall, shopping in Dubai was a unique experience that added to our travel costs but also enriched our visit to this vibrant city.

SIM Card

Total: $46

We also budgeted for data expenses during our stay in Dubai, choosing to use Airalo, an easy-to-use e-SIM provider. This decision added convenience to our trip, as we were able to stay connected without dealing with physical SIM cards. It was definitely more expensive than we are used to while traveling, but that was just the nature of the destination.

Travel Insurance

Total: $20

We always secure travel insurance before embarking on any trip and highly recommend others to do the same. For our 4-day Dubai adventure, we pro-rated our usual monthly payment of $45 per person. Our chosen provider is SafetyWing, which covers our travel and emergency medical expenses. For instance, it covers trip cancellation, lost luggage, as well as unforeseen medical emergencies such as accidents or sudden illness. Having this coverage provides peace of mind allowing us to fully enjoy our travels.

Are you covered for your next trip? Whether you’re planning a quick weekend getaway or a long-term adventure, SafetyWing has you covered. From medical emergencies to lost luggage, they’ll take care of it all. Plus, they even offer emergency response and natural disaster coverage – pretty cool, huh?

Total Dubai Travel Cost

Total: $991

Average: $248 per day

Average: $124 per person per day

Total with Flights: $1,486

In summary, our four-day trip to Dubai was a significant expenditure, with total costs reaching $991, or an average of $248 per day and $124 per person per day. This included accommodations, food and drink, transportation, excursions, personal expenses, data expenses, and travel insurance.

It’s important to note that our journey was during a less popular time of year, and costs could be even higher during peak season. Despite the high costs, the experience offered by Dubai was well worth it, providing a unique blend of modern luxury and traditional culture.
