How to Experience the Amalfi Coast Drive
Rent a Vespa
We opted for the bucket list worthy road trip along the Amalfi Coast on a classic Italian Vespa. And boy was she cute. We rented a perfect white Vespa (nicknamed Polar Bear by the end) for two full days from Amalfi Motorent.
The Amalfi Motorent dropped it off at our hotel the evening before so we could hit the road early the next morning and maximize our time. Since we traveled during the off-season, traffic was light, allowing us to explore at a relaxed pace. The Vespa gave us the freedom to stop wherever we wanted, from scenic overlooks to quiet coastal cafés along the Amalfi Coast road, making the journey even more special.
While riding a Vespa adds a sense of adventure and romance to the trip, it’s not for everyone, the winding roads can be tricky, and parking in busy towns like Positano can be a challenge. But if you’re up for a bit of excitement, driving Amalfi on a Vespa is an incredible way to experience the Amalfi drive on your own terms!

Rent a Car
If you’re planning to rent a car for the Amalfi Coast, go for a smaller one. Trust me, you’ll thank yourself later. The roads here are famously narrow and winding, and squeezing through tight turns, especially when buses come barreling through, can be a challenge. A compact car makes it way easier to maneuver, and you’ll have a better chance of finding parking in the busy towns like Positano and Amalfi.
Speaking of parking a car, it’s definitely pricier than parking a scooter, and the rates can vary depending on the size of your car. Expect to pay more for larger vehicles, and keep in mind that free street parking is almost impossible to find.
That said, driving Amalfi in a car is definitely more comfortable than tackling these steep coastal roads on a Vespa, especially if you’re not super confident on two wheels. With the right mindset (and a little patience for traffic), renting a car can be a great way to explore the coast road at your own pace, even if you’re only visiting for one day!

Public Transportation
Yes, you can absolutely still enjoy the views on public transportation! The SITA buses that run along the Amalfi Coast have plenty of window seats, so you’ll still get those jaw-dropping cliffside views without having to focus on the road.
If you’re following an Amalfi Coast drive itinerary, this can be a great alternative for certain stretches of the journey. The only downside? These buses can get really crowded, especially during peak season. If you don’t board early, you might end up standing the whole ride, so definitely plan ahead if you want a seat.
Pro tip: If you get to a bus stop and see a massive crowd, try walking to the stop before that one on the route. You’ll have a better chance of beating the rush and actually snagging a seat.
One weird thing to note, no sticking your hand out the window and feeling the breeze in your fingers. Apparently, that’s a no-go on public buses. And honestly, that’s like 75% of the reason to drive yourself, right?
If you’re looking for a budget-friendly, no-stress way to get around, the bus is still a solid option! After all, is driving the Amalfi Coast dangerous? That depends on your confidence with narrow, winding roads, but public transport is always a stress-free alternative!

On Foot
Surprisingly, walking between towns is actually a pretty great option! There are some scenic hiking paths above the main road that give you beautiful views without the stress of dodging traffic.
But if you’re sticking to the roadway, just know that plenty of people do it, it’s common to see travelers walking (or even biking!) between villages. If you’re planning your itinerary, this can be a slow, immersive way to take in the beauty of the coast, and you’ll stumble upon little hidden spots you’d miss in a car.
That said, be ready for some serious inclines because it is steep. Like, your calves will feel the burn. And since you’re sharing the road with cars, buses, and the occasional Vespa zooming by, stay alert and hug the edge as much as possible.

Essential Requirements for Driving the Amalfi Coast Drive
Thinking about renting a car or Vespa for the Amalfi Coast Drive? Whether you’re after freedom, adventure, or the thrill of cruising along stunning coastal roads, there are a few key things to know before you rent.
License and Documentation
Before renting a car or Vespa for the Amalfi Coast, don’t forget your physical driver’s license. Rental agencies need to check it before handing over the keys, and it must be valid, no exceptions. If you’re from a non-EU country, you don’t need an International Driver’s License, just your regular one. The process is simple: show your license, sign a few papers, and you’re good to go!
Keep an eye on the Amalfi Coast driving restrictions 2025, as new regulations might impact rental options and traffic in certain areas. As for insurance, we went with SafetyWing Travel Insurance for peace of mind, as it covers motor scooter-related injuries. Be sure to double-check all requirements based on your plan, including the allowed motor size (125cc, etc.).
If you’re driving the Amalfi Coast in March, expect lighter traffic but unpredictable weather, rain showers can make the roads slick. Still, the off-season charm and scenic views make it a great time to visit!
Experience Italy the way we did. From Vespa rides and wine tastings to cooking classes and hidden tours, these Italy Activities are worth adding to your trip.
Experience Requirements
While driving a car in the Amalfi Coast has its challenges, it is a bit more self-explanatory. However, riding a scooter along the Amalfi Coast requires more skill and prior scooter riding experience. AKA, it’s not for beginners.
The roads are steep, narrow, and full of sharp turns, and traffic can get intense, especially in hotspots like Positano and Amalfi. If you’ve never ridden a scooter before, this isn’t the best place to start. But if you’re already comfortable on two wheels, it’s an amazing way to explore, just take it slow, stay alert, and be prepared for unpredictable traffic.
There are small barriers along most of the route, but the roads can still feel pretty tight, especially when buses and cars squeeze by. The key is staying calm, keeping your balance, and always being aware of your surroundings. We took our time, avoided rush hours, and found that as long as we were careful, it was totally manageable.

Vespa Rental Guide for the Amalfi Coast Drive
If you’re planning to rent a Vespa on the Amalfi Coast, the process is super quick and easy. The best part? Many rental companies deliver the scooter straight to your hotel, so there’s no need to pick it up from a shop, a huge convenience, especially if you’re short on time.
The Vespa we got was in great condition, and having it dropped off right at our door meant we could start exploring immediately. If you’re traveling during peak season, it’s best to book at least a few weeks (if not months) in advance to make sure you get the bike you want.
There are also other rental options in Sorrento and Positano, but if you’re looking for a smooth, hassle-free experience, Amalfi Vespa is definitely worth checking out! If you’re debating between exploring the Amalfi Coast by car or on a Vespa, keep in mind that driving Amalfi Coast roads can be tricky.

Cost Breakdown for Vespa Rental
Renting a Vespa on the Amalfi Coast was more than we are used to paying for a rental bike (Southeast Asia will ruin you like that) but honestly, worth every penny for the experience. We paid €140 per day, and they even included drop-off and pick-up before and after we left. Fuel costs were minimal, we only had to fill up once, which cost €1.70 per liter, totaling ~€9.00, and that was enough for two full days of riding.
Parking was another expected expense, but was easier than we imagined. We used private lots over two days, all charging by the hour. The lots were usually covered, and always secured (with people working there). The closer you are to the attractions, the higher the prices. They will have a variable price as well, depending on the vehicle you are driving (even amongst different scooters and bikes).
There was also paid street parking available in some areas. Look for the blue-lined street spots (and usually other bikes) and signs for Easy Park paid parking. Be sure to download the Easy Park App ahead of time.
In total we spent $68 over two full days of exploring. I will say this is probably higher than the average traveler, since we packed in a LOT of stops over those two days. And the best part, it was all via credit card (even Apple Pay)!

Navigating the Amalfi Coast Drive by Vespa
Road Conditions and Traffic
Driving along the Amalfi Coast is absolutely unforgettable, but it’s not the easiest ride. The roads are well-paved but super narrow, with only a single lane in each direction, the space can feel quite limited, especially when passing buses or parked cars.
Expect random stops for pedestrians, cyclists, and oversized vehicles squeezing through tight spots. Traffic is busiest near ports (most notably Positano and Amalfi), while smaller towns tend to be a bit calmer. Weekends are way busier, with more tourists and day-trippers, so if you want a smoother ride, aim for a weekday drive.
One pro tip we learned? Keep your legs out slightly in slow traffic or tight turns, it helps with balance and makes maneuvering feel way smoother. Also, don’t be surprised if locals zip past you on scooters or in tiny cars, it’s just the driving in Amalfi culture, so stay relaxed and drive at your own pace.
The hairpin turns and elevation changes are no joke, so if you’re prone to motion sickness, bring patches or meds (trust me, they help!).
Check out the Amalfi Coast beaches, where crystal-clear waters and dreamy coastlines await!
Safety Tips for the Amalfi Coast Drive
While riding a motorbike, safety should always come first. Mornings can be tricky, as shaded areas tend to stay slippery longer, so take it slow, especially on those sharp turns. If the weather takes a turn, don’t push through, pull over somewhere safe, whether it’s a roadside stop or a cozy café. The Amalfi Coast road can get slick fast, and trust me, waiting out the rain is always the better option.
Most importantly, drive defensively, don’t rush, don’t feel pressured to keep up with locals speeding past you, and focus on the road, not just the views. The scenery is stunning, but staying alert and cautious will make sure you enjoy it safely!
There are plenty of turnouts and lookout points that you can safely pull over into and admire the views. And if you’re still wondering what is Amalfi Coast all about, it’s a breathtaking stretch of cliffside villages, winding roads, and panoramic sea views that make every ride unforgettable.

Italian Driving Laws and Regulations
Driving in Italy comes with a few key rules you’ll want to keep in mind. One of the biggest things to watch out for is ZTL zones (Limited Traffic Zones), many cities, especially historical ones, don’t allow cars in certain areas unless you have a special permit.
If you accidentally drive along the Amalfi Coast and enter one, expect a hefty fine, and trust me, they track everything with cameras and will send the rental company your ticket. It’s best to park on the outskirts and walk or take public transport when heading into town.
Italy also has a zero-tolerance policy for drinking and driving, so if you’re planning on having a drink, don’t get behind the wheel. The good news? Restaurants and beach bars have plenty of delicious non-alcoholic options, so you can still enjoy a refreshing local spritz without any worries.
As for speed limits, highways usually max out at 130 km/h (81 mph), while coastal roads are much lower, always check signs to avoid fines. And if you’re renting a Vespa or scooter, helmets are 100% required, no exceptions!
Fun fact: if you’re wondering what Amalfi Coast in Italian is, it’s “Costiera Amalfitana,” a name as beautiful as the place itself!
Navigation Tips for the Amalfi Coast Drive
Having good navigation is key when driving the Amalfi Coast, and a phone holder makes all the difference. Our Vespa came with one, and it was a total game-changer, we just popped in our phone, pulled up Google Maps, and never had to worry about getting lost.
Since the roads are super winding, it was really helpful to see upcoming turns in advance, making the whole Amalfi Coast route feel way smoother. If you’re renting a scooter or car, definitely check if it comes with a holder, or bring your own for an easier ride.
To save on data, we downloaded Google Maps offline ahead of time, so we weren’t constantly using mobile data while navigating. Another great option is to download an eSIM. We love using Airalo’s European Region plan, which gave us 5 GB for just $20 and kept us connected the entire trip (even as we traveled to another country).
Pack for the coast with confidence. From swimsuits to sandals, here’s everything we brought in our Amalfi Packing List so you can travel light but prepared.
Practical Parking Guide Along the Amalfi Coast Drive
When it comes to parking on the Amalfi Coast, there’s one thing to know upfront, free parking doesn’t exist. Every spot comes with a fee, and the closer you get to town centers, the pricier it gets.
The majority of the time, we used the private parking lots quite close to where we wanted to go. We paid around €1.50–€4 per hour, which isn’t terrible, but it adds up if you’re parking for a while. These lots are usually covered and always secure with the attendants present the whole time. We even accidentally left our phone in the holder for a few hours and it was still there when we got back!
Note: The paid parking lots will ask you to not lock your front wheel on your scooter so they can move the bike if they need to make more room. We did this every time with no problems.
Looking to save even more? Park outside the main towns and take a short walk in, it saves money and stress and lets you enjoy the scenery instead of circling for a spot.
One thing that made parking way easier for us was the Easy Park app. This will help for any street parking (blue-lined spaces). Instead of fumbling for change or worrying about time limits, we could pay right from our phone and extend our parking if needed. Definitely download it before your trip, it’s a lifesaver! We used it in Amalfi and were able to park right by the port and extend it while we were at dinner so we could walk around a bit more.
Make Italy stress-free from the start. Our curated Italy Packing List covers every season and region, so you’re ready for city strolls, vineyard tours, and coastal getaways.
Essential Tips for Your Amalfi Coast Drive Experience
Sun Protection and Comfort
- Sun Protection Needs – The sun is intense, so apply sunscreen before every ride and reapply throughout the day, especially on your face, neck, and arms.
- Motorcycle Gloves – Protect your hands from sunburn and wind exposure while also improving grip on the Vespa—trust us, they make a difference!
- Rash Guard – A light, UV-protective rash guard keeps you covered without overheating, saving you from constant sunscreen reapplication.
- Bug Protection (Keep Your Mouth Closed!) – Strong winds mean bugs everywhere—keep your mouth shut unless you want an unexpected snack.
Technical Tips for Vespa Operation
- Kickstand Operation – We had a little trouble with this at first, but it’s easy once you get the hang of it. To get the Vespa off the kickstand, just plant your feet and roll the bike forward. To park, step off, press the kickstand down, and pull the handlebars back—after a few tries, it becomes second nature.
- Partner Weight Distribution – If you’re riding with a partner, their weight matters just as much as yours for balance. We found that keeping open communication made the ride smoother and more enjoyable. Shifting weight too suddenly can throw off balance, so move together and stay in sync. I would always announce when I needed to adjust and it would help Nate prepare for it.
- Storage Capacity – The Vespa has just enough space for a light jacket, a small bag, or a couple of essentials under the seat. It’s perfect for storing extra layers since the weather can change quickly along the coast. The Vespa we had even had a locked trunk so we could put one helmet in each spot when we left the scooter.
- Right vs. Left Turns – Nate quickly realized right turns felt trickier than left ones, so he took them slower. If something feels off, don’t rush or try to keep up with traffic, ride at your own pace, especially on winding roads.
- Night Driving Precautions – Riding at night on the Amalfi Coast isn’t ideal, especially for first-timers. The roads are already tough during the day, and at night, visibility is a real issue. If you have to ride after dark, wear a reflective vest , it made us feel way safer and helped others see us on the road.
